What is far infrared?
Far Infrared is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is one of three types of infrared. Of the three, Far Infrared is the only one which solely presents through heat rather than heat and light. Because of this, it is the most effective and efficient of the infrared wavelengths at heating an area and those within it.
Rather than a typical convection heater which uses fans to blow out hot air, Far Infrared emits the same ray as the sun (just without the UV) and this targets mass before air temperature. Because of this, it is much more fast acting than hot air as we are not waiting upon the hot air to circulate down to where we can feel it.
This also comes in useful for applications such as warehouses, factories or churches where there is a high ceiling void. A hot air blower system would send all of it’s produce to the rafters, heating the roof of the building rather than those on the floor. However, Far Infrared heaters target what is below them and are unaffected by draughts or high voids as their rays do not rise.
Because of its wavelength, far infrared passes through the air, travelling around molecules instead of colliding with them and heating them. Once, far infrared rays come into contact with a surface, they pass on their heat into this surface which begins to build what we call a ‘Thermal Store’. This store will retain heat until it can no longer hold any more, and then will gently emit this back into the area, essentially turning it into it’s own storage heater. This re-emittance means that even when the heating units are turned off, the room will continue to be warm for quite some time.
All of this means that our heaters can be much lower wattage because we are not having to power anything extra like fans, or buttons. All of our heaters are 98.5% electrically efficient, and because of the simplistic build, they are completely zero maintenance! There are no annual checks or maintenance needed and the Carbon Crystal element on the inside is made to last for around 100,000 hours of use at 24 hours a day with no breaks!
Are Infrared heaters cost effective?
Yes! There are many reasons why Far Infrared is cheaper to run; the controllability, the type of heat they emit, maintenance and general build of the panels all contribute.
As mentioned above, one main reason for cheaper running costs is the lower wattage of the panels. 98.5% of the electricity that the panels use is returned in the heat output. For other forms of heat such as storage heaters, these can be as low as 40%! This is because convection heaters work a lot harder to produce the same amount of heat. The process of producing heat is much more draining on the electricity through traditional methods as the heater is working to take in cold air, warm it up and then distribute it back out. Along with the fans, lights and buttons – this equal’s very little heat pay off for a lot of electricity!
Another reason that the infrared can save money is the type of heat that it produces. Far infrared remains in a property for much longer without dissipating or travelling in draughts. After a small amount of time of the infrared being exposed to an area, the initial heat up period will get less and less as the ‘Thermal Store’ is created. After a week or so the heaters are more used to top up the temperature again on top of the residual warmth already in the room. The infrared remains in the fabric of the room unlike convection heat which escapes very easily. This means that when using convection, it can take as much as an hour to heat up, whereas the infrared can heat rooms up as quickly as 5 minutes.
With the use of a controller, the panels will be switching on/off throughout the day to maintain the temperature of the room, meaning that even during ‘heating mode’ there will be times that the panels aren’t on. The controllers work by setting a desired temperature, the panels will then work to get the area up to that temperature. Once it is warm enough, the panels will then turn themselves off until the temperature falls a certain amount below the target temperature. In a recent test we conducted at a site we had installed, while the room was programmed to be at 22°C, the panels worked for around 7 minutes to get up to this temperature and the panels then turned off. From here, it took at least 40 minutes for the panels to turn back on again to top the heat up.
The heaters can be micromanaged so that only the required heaters are on at any given time. Usually, with most heating systems, there would be one central point that needs to be running to use any of the radiators in the building. Infrared on the other hand, can be programmed so that the controllers to areas are on at certain times and not in rooms that are not being occupied. The more controllers are utilised, the more they will reduce running times.
Far infrared panels are made in a very simple way. This means that unlike a lot of other forms of heating, there is no servicing needed at all. Most heating systems require annual checks and maintenance that can really add onto the cost of a system! Our infrared heaters are fit and forget with no moving parts, helping to give you peace of mind.
Are Far Infrared heaters good for your health?
A popular concern with Far Infrared technology is whether it is detrimental to a person’s health to be in close proximity to it or use it for extended periods of time. Oftentimes, Far Infrared heaters are confused with Mid Infrared or Near Infrared.
Mid Infrared is most commonly found outside pubs and in smoking areas. Due to their obtrusive orange-glare and abrasive heat, it is not recommended for a person to stand next to or beneath a mid-infrared heater for prolonged periods of time as they are medically proven to cause severe migraines.
Near Infrared produces no visible light and creates no form of heat so it cannot be felt. Because of the fact it is invisible, Near Infrared is perhaps even more dangerous than Mid Infrared as it is impossible to know when you are exposed to it. Near Infrared causes a painful reaction to exposed skin and, in the case of the human eye, raises the internal temperature of the eye, essentially “baking” it. This form of Infrared is more commonly found in industrial environments such as steel mills, textile, paper, and glass manufacturers where workers are provided with the suitable PPE to protect themselves. Near Infrared and Far Infrared are polar opposites on the Infrared Spectrum and this is why they have such different effects on the human body.
In the case of Heissen heaters, they emit Far Infrared rays. These rays, unlike their harmful counterparts, are medically proven to have a range of health benefits. In fact, the health benefits of Far Infrared have led to this technology being commercialised to form saunas, hot yoga studios, beauty clinics and health spas.
Within the Infrared Radiation band, only Far Infrared transfers energy solely in the form of heat which is received by thermoreceptors in the skin as radiant heat. This heat is absorbed by the human body, helping to soothe muscle pain and spasms, reducing inflammation, and aiding joint pain and blood flow. By increasing blood circulation, regular Far Infrared treatments can directly prevent certain health issues from surfacing or manage on-going afflictions.
In addition to this, FIR saunas have been proven to remove seven times more toxins from the body than traditional steam saunas. Whilst the human body will naturally dispose of toxins through the kidneys, liver and skin, the theory behind saunas is that by proactively helping your body through this process allows the digestive system time to heal so that it can better absorb nutrients in the future.
Infrared saunas encourage relaxation, helping to balance the body’s cortisol level. Cortisol is the body’s stress hormone, controlling blood sugar levels, the regulation of the metabolism and assisting with memory formulation. Having a cortisol imbalance can lead to a number of symptoms, including depression, high blood pressure, severe fatigue, and cognitive difficulties.
As the goal of Heissen FIR heaters is to heat objects rather than raise the air temperature, it does not cause the air in a room to circulate. For sufferers of asthma, allergies and chronic sinusitis, far infrared heating can help to prevent flare-ups and symptoms. Due to the fact it doesn’t stir the air, this means that the air in the room remains clean, dust free and pathogen free.
Not only is FIR absorbed by the human body, but it is also emitted by the body in the form of black body radiation. The term “black body” was coined by Gustav Kirchhoff in 1860. Essentially, all matter absorbs electromagnetic energy radiation to some level and an object which absorbs all radiation falling on it is called a black body- a perfect absorber. When a black body reaches a uniform temperature state, it emits back this absorbed energy and is termed as “black body radiation”. This means that even after the FIR heaters are turned off, a person will continue to feel the benefit of them for some time afterwards.
Unlike other forms of heating, FIR heating doesn’t require any dangerous gases or chemicals meaning that it is safe even if the panel should stop working for some reason. In addition to this, the heaters require a low amount of energy consumption meaning that not only are they safe, but they are economical to run also.
Can the heaters be run 24 hours a day?
We recommend that in any 24 hour period, the panels are permitted a 10 minute break. This helps to preserve the heating element within, ensuring that it continues to work to the best of its ability.
We do recommend using a controller alongside the heaters which would mean that the heaters would not need to be run for the whole 24 hours. Using a controller will ensure that the heaters are only running when required, and once the room reaches the desired temperature, the heaters will turn off. Not only does this help to protect the heating element, but it will also keep running costs to a minimum.
How hot are infrared panels?
As with any heater, Far Infrared panels have a surface temperature. However, Heissen panels are built with triple insulation to ensure the surface temperature of the panels reach no higher than 70 – 90°C at the most (the same temperature as a traditional wet radiator).
Heissen supply a number of NHS and Care Home contracts. To secure these contracts, we had to prove that our panels, though warm to the touch, would not break the skin or cause injury should a person accidentally find themselves touching one for some time. We were able to prove this easily.
Because of this, we are able to supply panels that can be wall mounted as they are safe to be mounted at a height where people are within reach of them.
With products such as our Vectors, the surface temperatures are higher as these are much more powerful heaters. We typically recommend these for larger, harder to heat areas and will mount out of reach. The surface temperature on these bar heaters is 350°C, which is why we always recommend mounting these heaters no lower than 2.6m high to reduce any possibility of injury.
In almost all domestic applications, we will recommend panel heaters as there is usually no need for a heater as large as our bar heaters, unless in a conservatory.
There are some suppliers of “Far Infrared” whose panels can reach temperatures of 120°C – hotter than boiling water! This will be due to using cheaper elements and components to cut costs, and the heat emitted will be part infrared and part convection, making them much less efficient.
Our panels go through rigorous testing to ensure that they are completely safe to use. An important test we carry out with each heater is constantly monitoring the surface temperature. This is to ensure that the surface temperature of our panels never exceeds 90°C.
The reason we do this is twofold: A) it means your panel will last much longer as the heating elements are not getting to a temperature where they are at risk of burning out. B) this also ensures that the panels are safe to install at lower levels.
Our ceiling panels are built slightly differently to the wall panels to ensure they have an even lower surface temperature. This is to prevent the rising heat from becoming too hot and prevents overheating. Our ceiling kit also allows for a good air gap between the back of the heater and the ceiling to allow any inevitable latent heat to escape.
Every single heater we offer has an overheat protection system. If a panel does in any way happen to have an issue, it will never get to a temperature that could be dangerous. If it were to overheat for any reason, once the panel gets up to a certain temperature, the heater would shut down before becoming hazardous.
